But the The Kon-Tiki smashed into the reef at Raroia in the Tuamotus on 7 August 1947 after a 101-day, 4,300-nautical-mile (5,000-mile or 8,000 km) journey across the Pacific Ocean. Heyerdahl had nearly drowned at least twice in childhood and did not take easily to water; he said later that there were times in each of his raft voyages when he feared for his life.

The Kon-Tiki Raft party reported first sighting land—Pukapuka Island in the Tuamotas—on July 30. It drifted about 260 miles more before hitting Raroia Reef. The expedition left the port of Callao, Peru, on April 28 with the avowed purpose of testing the theory of its leader, Thor Heyerdahl, 32-year-old ethnologist, that the Pacific islands were originally settled by migrating peoples from The Kon-Tiki expedition and the book Heyerdahl wrote about it became landmarks of 20 th century anthropology, adventure, and literature. The Kon-Tiki expedition offered a world exhausted by war the enduring simplicity of a wooden raft drifting slowly across the mythical Pacific of Cook, Bougainville, Banks, Roggeveen , and Fletcher Christian. Kon Tiki set off from Peru on the afternoon of 28th April 1947, starting its epic journey across the Pacific Ocean.
